West German pottery: Dümler & Breiden

Dümler & Breiden was founded in 1883 by Peter Dümler and his brother-in-law Albert Breiden. The factory was located in the Höhr-Grenzhausen region, not far from Koblenz in western Germany. During the late 19th century and early 20th century, the company produced beer steins and punch bowls.

By the 1950s and 1960s, the company had become one of West Germany's leading manufacturers of ceramics. They produced a wide range of forms that were characterized by flamboyant and quirky styles and color combinations that were considered to be of good quality.

Their products were made of white clay and were marked with the image of crossed swords that incorporated the initials D and B as pommels. The markings included form and size numbers and the word GERMANY (generally no W or WEST) in distinctive block capital letters.  Pieces can be found with our without the company logo, with or without the word STUDIO, and they are sometimes embossed and sometimes incised.

The best known designers for D&B were Ernst Dümler, Paul Zimmerling and Rudolf Christmann, and the most sought-after designs are Domino, Polar and Saturn.

The company ceased operations in 1992.
